The Bristol Honda Pitbulls are delighted to announce the return of Steve Couzens behind the bench for the 2024/25 season.

Couzens has been a part of the first team since 2009 as a coach, but has seen his time involved with Bristol Ice Hockey extend much further beyond that.

Steve’s playing career spanned across three decades with him mainly featuring for the Avon Arrows in the 70’s and 80’s and the Bristol Bulldogs in the 90’s. When he retired in 1993, he dove straight into coaching.

He took up a junior coaching role, helping develop the talent of young aspiring players and turning them into budding stars up until the closure of the Frogmore Rink. He’s had a major impact on Pitbulls players , both past and present, across junior and senior years.

In 2009 he stepped into his familiar role behind the bench of the Bristol Pitbulls where he has been situated for well over a decade.

He is a thoroughly loved character both in the dressing room and in the wider Hockey community and the Pitbulls are ecstatic to have him back for this season ahead.

His influence in Bristol Hockey is unparalleled by anyone else and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Richie Hargreaves is pleased to have Couzens back, stating how crucial he is to the team:

“Steve Couzens is a Bristol Pitbull guy through and through. He is one of the nicest guys in hockey, and he is the type of person who will do anything for anyone.

“Steve’s help is invaluable, and so much of his work goes unnoticed. He helps on the ice, on the bench on game days, behind the scenes with equipment and around the rink. When you have a small off-ice group, he is the type of guy who becomes invaluable to us as an organisation”.

Head Coach Bari McKenzie added:

“Every team needs a guy like Steve. All the boys loved having him about last season. He’s a guy who is always in a good mood and guys feed off his positivity”.

Couzens joins Bari McKenzie and Tony Redmond as Bench staff for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
