🏒 Mr. Bristol Hockey – Steve Cousins

When talking about ice hockey in Bristol, it’s impossible to overlook Steve Cousins. Known affectionately as “Mr. Bristol Hockey”, Steve is the Pitbulls’ Assistant Bench Coach and a larger-than-life figure you can’t miss on game days. His passion, knowledge, and input continue to shape the sport in our city just as they have since the early 1970s.
From the Rink to the National Stage
Steve first pulled on his skates in 1972 at the old Frogmore Street rink in the city centre. With no junior system in place, he was thrown straight into the deep end with the adult team. From there, he made his mark with the Bristol Red Wings, before later turning out for the Avon Arrows and eventually playing his final game in 1992 for the Bristol Bulldogs.
During his career, Steve also proudly represented England, becoming one of the youngest Bristolians ever to score in an English shirt. Aside from a short stint with the Soho Barons, his entire career was spent wearing Bristol colours a testament to his loyalty to the city and its hockey heritage.
Coaching and Developing Talent
Steve’s love for the game didn’t stop when his playing days ended. Instead, he dedicated himself to grassroots development, coaching countless juniors who went on to successful careers including the Hargreaves brothers, Geoff O’Hara, Matt Van Der Velden, Greg Rockman, and the Smith brothers to mention a few.
He remained heavily involved with the junior programme right up until the final days of Frogmore Street rink, before it was demolished to make way for student accommodation.
A Pitbulls Pillar
Steve joined the Bristol Pitbulls in 2009, playing a key role in the team’s inaugural year and the National League 2 championship win that very first season. He remained a constant presence as the club played its “road years” away from Bristol, contributing to the 2015 playoff and league title.
Since the Pitbulls’ return home, Steve has continued to be an integral part of the organisation — a true pillar of the club and of ice hockey in Bristol.
Honouring a Legend
To celebrate Steve’s 60 years of dedication to hockey, the Drive Bristol North Pitbulls are proud to announce that one of our brand-new hospitality suites will be named in his honour:
✨ The Cousins Box ✨
This is a fitting tribute to a man whose loyalty, commitment, and passion have left an indelible mark on the sport in our city.
